How To Conserve Energy While Using Your Oven

It’s that time of year when your kitchen starts calling for you. Something about Autumn makes many people want to bake. While many energy conservers discourage the use of your oven, there are ways to bake using your oven which are energy efficient.
Keep Your Oven Clean
It seems like common sense, right? Most people don’t take the time to clean their oven that often. A clean oven equals an efficient oven. Also, it’s important to make sure that the seal on the oven is tightened in order to thwart heat loss. Another good tip - don’t line the bottom of your oven with tinfoil! Air needs to be able to circulate in order to heat the oven properly.
Preheat the Oven Only When You are Ready
This might seem like another no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people turn on their ovens up to an hour or more before cooking, when all it takes to preheat an oven to the proper temperature is about 10  minutes. Many food items can be started in a room temperature oven, although most baked recipes require a heated oven. When your oven is keeping itself heated for an extended period of time without actually heating anything, energy is being wasted. Remember, it takes a lot of energy to heat an oven!
Double-Check Your Bake-ware
Believe it or not, the type of bake-ware you use can make a huge difference in how efficiently your oven works. Glass and Pyrex pans not only reduces cooking times, they also require lower cooking temperatures. Glass and Pyrex pans have been known to cook more evenly as well.
Bake Simultaneously
Although not everything can be baked together, there are some foods that can be baked simultaneously with no problem. You probably won’t want to bake a chocolate cake in the same oven as onion rings; however, things like pizza and garlic bread can share the same oven.
No Peeking!
Every time you “peek” into your oven to check on your recipe, you’re letting hot air out. This is wasting energy - similar to when you were a kid and your parents would yell at you for leaving the garage door open during winter. Try to keep in mind that every time you open the door to “peek in” at the food cooking in your oven, you’re losing about 25 degrees in heat. Peeking in the oven doesn’t help your food cook faster- in fact it causes it to cook slower!
These are just a few tips for conserving energy while baking this autumn. You may also consider investing in a convection oven or toaster oven. There’s no reason why you can’t bake and save energy at the same time!

WAYS TO USE RAIN WATER

Rain is a naturally occurring source of fresh water, but it’s scarce. Fresh water makes up only 3 percent of all water on earth, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, so it’s important to conserve it and to avoid wasting rainwater. While you should not drink rainwater, you can use it for many daily tasks, such as cleaning, watering plants and flushing toilets.

Cleaning

Mix rainwater with soap, detergent or cleaning fluid to make a liquid cleaning solution, and use that solution to wash everyday items. Because rainwater may contain atmospheric pollutants and germs, it’s likely not suitable for drinking. But it’s not necessary to use the water that comes out of your faucets to clean, especially since you normally would mix it with cleaning solution. Planet Green recommends you get in the habit of using rainwater to clean your floors, your clothing and your car.

Water Plants

Rainwater will naturally water some outdoor plants during a storm, but does not reach indoor plants or always provide outside plants with the hydration they need. When you collect rainwater, you can use it to water any of your plants, and even your lawn.

Flush Toilets

Just as it’s unnecessary to clean your floors with clean water from the tap, you also don’t need to flush the toilet with it. Use rainwater that otherwise would be wasted to flush your waste down the toilet. Bring a bucket of rainwater into your bathroom, and after you flush, fill the tank with rainwater for the next flush. Check your local laws, however, before you begin filling your toilet tank with rainwater, some communities need a permit.

Tips for Green Remodeling

Tips for Green Remodeling

Taking an eco-friendly approach to remodeling not only helps to lessen your ecological footprint, but can also lessen the monetary strain on your wallet. Many of these remodeling ideas can be done by you, saving you even more money because you will not have to hire a contractor. Just take a look around your house and make note of the things that you would like to change. There is almost certainly a green way to make all the changes on your list.

Drafty Windows and Doors

Having drafty windows results in your home leaking energy, which can increase your energy bills by as much as 30 percent. To test and see if your windows and doors are drafty, push the curtains out-of-the-way, or take them down, and grab an incense stick. You will light this and place it up to each window and door frame. If you see the smoke being blown, you know that there is a draft present. You can grab some eco-friendly caulking to seal the windows and grab a draft snake or an old towel to seal the bottom of doors.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat sounds like a complex piece of electronic equipment, and in a way it is. This device will make sure your house stays at a constant temperature, reducing energy usage, as well as heating and cooling bills. These are relatively inexpensive and you can install them yourself with a trusty screwdriver. Just be sure to shut off the power before disconnecting and reconnecting the wires.

Check Your Faucets

A minor leak in a single pipe joint or faucet can result in three gallons of wasted water each day. This hurts the environment, as well as your pocketbook. Some leaks can be easily corrected with a pipe wrench and a few minutes of your time. If the leak is more complex, you may need to consult a plumber to make sure the job is done correctly and completely. If you want to further your water-saving efforts, there are special faucets and shower heads that are designed to conserve water. Many of these can be installed by using the instructions and a few simple tools.
These shower heads are known as low-flow. These are inexpensive and can save up to 70 percent of the water you used before installing it. Another major water hog is your toilet. These also come in low-flow versions that can save you several gallons of water per day.

Swap Out Appliances for Energy Star Brands

A house that is fully equipped with Energy Star appliances will run on about 30 percent less energy than a house using basic appliances. Not only will you save energy, but you will also save hundreds of dollars over the course of a year. Most appliances can be easily installed by you without needing to pay outside help. You can find any appliance in Energy Star form, from microwaves to washers and dryers, and everything in between.
